Due to the outbreak of the corona virus, the need and demand to wear face masks as increased enormously. While many people are willing to wear a face mask, they find it uncomfortable or difficult to breath in. Furthermore, not all masks are of good quality, and disposable masks are costly and wasteful.
Electronics company LG has developed a portable air purification system that serves as a face mask. It includes replaceable HEPA filters and battery-operated fans for easy breathing. It protects the wearer against particulate matter, pollen, allergens, bacteria, and viruses.
The mask, also called PuriCare Wearable Air Purifier, combines a gas mask and mouth mask into one. It has dual fans and a breathing sensor, allowing users to constantly take in clean, filtered air. The fans automatically accelerate upon inhalation, accelerating the air flow. They shut down upon exhale, allowing less resistance with the outflow. The mask comes with a cover that is equipped with UV LED lights to kill harmful germs while the mask charges. Furthermore, the cover indicates via an app when the filters need to be replaced. It is fully recyclable, even further reducing the waste problems associated with masks.
While LG is pleased with the innovation – “the PuriCare is an exciting addition to our growing line of products designed to provide meaningful health and hygiene benefits” – it continues to explore the extent to which it protects against Covid-19.
